Event Description:
Fancy a bit of history along with your pint? Hobart is a town with a murky past, full of rambling pubs that were the scene of many bawdy nights that would make Hell’s Angels look tame. What better way to learn about the colourful past of one of Australia’s most historic cities than with a tour of the pubs that were a second home to various carousing characters? Hobart Historic Tours run their Old Hobart Pub Tour on a daily basis, which takes an entertaining look at the brothels, smugglers, criminals and waterfront mafia that ruled Hobart during the 1800s with an iron fist and a bottle of rum.

The tour begins along the Hobart waterfront before moving to the Lark Distillery for a drink and the story of the dire circumstances of the first settlement (and their boozy ways). The folks at the Lark Distillery will even shout the tour group a round of apple liqueur made with local Tassie apples. Then it’s on to one of Hobart’s most popular haunts - Knopwood’s Retreat. Named for the decidedly less popular former first Minister, Reverend Knopwood, the Retreat has been sating the thirst of Hobart’s drinkers and dreamers since 1835. The final stop on the tour is the notorious Irish Murphy’s, where amorous gents would call when in need of some female company and the authorities kept a sharp eye on the publican, Ma Dwyer and her shady business dealings. Packed full of vibrant stories, the Old Hobart Pub Tour paints a wild picture of a pretty town with a colourful past. The tour departs daily at 5pm and tickets cost $25 per person.
