Japanese restaurants tend to revel in their heritage rather than trying to shake the stereotypes of their culinary past. In steps Kobe Jones, one of King Street Wharfïes busiest restaurants, presenting Japanese cuisine modernised with the western tastes of California. This chic, contemporary restaurant is the perfect vessel from which to indulge in the unique flavours of this modern fusion.

The modern twist on Japanese food is a resounding success. Mouth watering entrees include the spider roll, a crunchy soft shell crab served with crab salad, avocado, cucumber and a sprinkle of smelt roe, the volcano roll, a sublime dish of Californian rolls topped with a delectable, creamy oven baked scallop and sprinkled with sesame seeds and finally, the number one special, a crab salad with avocado wrapped in snapper and baked with an unctuous Kobe Jones cream sauce. Fish takes centre stage among the main courses. Seared tuna steak is rolled in peppercorns and served pink and moist with a seafood risotto or perhaps try the green tea salmon, marinated and seared, served with wasabi mash and nori cream. Banquet menus are available for groups of four or more, a great way to ensure you sample all the culinary delicacies available.

LOCATION
King Street Wharf is a short stroll from the heart of Sydney's CBD. Located just 250m from Wynyard train station, there is direct access to King Street Wharf via Erskine Street by car and via the pedestrian foot bridge at King Street, or along Cockle Bar and the Darling Harbour waterfront promenade past the Sydney Aquarium. From the southern end of the CBD, you can also take the new light rail or take the scenic tour on the monorail. There is a constant network of Sydney buses in the area and if all else fails, there is also a taxi rank close by.

DETAILS
Every table at Kobe Jones has a water view and floor to ceiling glass doors fold back to a spacious, covered terrace. Decor is elegant and uncluttered, making the most of the spectacular backdrop of Darling Harbour.

Highly recommended are the Kobe Jones Sunset, Sweet Life and Watermelon Ceprioska. This is the place to come for cocktails, from the sublime Shanghai Martini (muddled ginger and lime, Midori Asolut Citron, crushed ice, topped with champagne) to the divine Smoothness (Baileys, Cointreau, Butterscotch Schnapps blended with mangos and topped with chocolate).

Japanese food with an American twist- the food at Kobe Jones as as visually stimulating as it is tantalizing in the mouth. I have dined here a few times as the food has a unique flavor and character that I have not been able to experience in any other Japanese restaurant. My personal suggestion would be to not order a 'main' for each person- but rather order many different entrees and side dishes to share. A personal favourite is the volcano roll (this have already been described very well above by Keith Austin (Good Living, 6th May 2003)so I will also give mention to the 'Number one Special'- It is certainly special. When you bite into this mysterious round ball a myriad of flavours and textures will pleasently surprise you. Then you will probably spend another few minutes trying to work out what exactly you ate! It's really just a Kobe Jones Specialty sushi which has been cooked in a thin batter. Other mentions so to the Soft shell crab and the Tuna Tataki...
Lastly- who can go past the green tea creme brulee...
