Navigating the cavernous expanse of Ikea in Rhodes Shopping Centre can work up quite an appetite. And if you're not in the mood for those famous Swedish meatballs, the team at Phoenix Restaurants have come up with a tempting alternative. Rhodes Phoenix is the newest addition to the Phoenix family of Chinese restaurants. Perched on the top floor overlooking the food court, it has room for over 500 diners. It's stately and serene; a slick, modern version of a Chinese teahouse with soothing red and brown tones. Yum cha sessions are lively but not overly, with abundant food served hot and fresh to masses of grateful shoppers.
There’s an expansive a la carte menu chock full of reliable versions of familiar fare: Peking duck, soft-shell crab in a salty, spicy batter, steaming hot pots of pork belly and pickled vegetables, and flavoursome Sichuan-spiced tofu. All the luxury items you’d expect are here too: braised abalone in oyster sauce, fresh lobster and Tasmanian king crab with a variety of condiments. It’s everything you could want from a shopping centre restaurant, well-suited for families and large parties, with acceptable service and high quality food. With prime positioning above the Reading cinema, it’s clear the Phoenix team have come up with another success.
