PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThe Brisbane German Club was established in 1883 and celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. The restaurant within, Zum Kaiser, reflects all things traditional and serves some great German meals. Every second Sunday sees the traditional lunch fruhschoppen spark a great atmosphere for members and newcomers alike. The menu suits a diverse clientele which melds contemporary dishes with those of the European variety. However, if you’re going to eat at Zum Kaiser it’s not hard to find yourself working your way around the roasted pork knuckle which is cooked to perfection and adorned with real sauerkraut and beer gravy. Also following the theme are the frikadelan which are German rissoles served with mash and fresh seasonal vegetables.
There are over 30 German beers to choose from, so it’s not hard to find the perfect companion to your meal. There are seven beers on tap and plenty more to choose from in the fridge, but when in Rome, or Berlin in this case, why not try a little schnapps. The German Club is a well-kept secret with a very warm and welcoming interior, so for dining a little differently, sit down to a meal at Zum Kaiser.
